The New Consequences of Inebriation

The women of a village in Central Maharashtra have been authorized by the panchayat to create an anti-tipple brigade. Tired of their husbands alcoholism and the fact that over 50% of the village men were alcoholics, the women submitted a petition to the village panchayat in an effort to save their families.

Forget alcohol rehab or AA meetings, this is definitely the way to go. I can imagine a group of self-righteous uptight moralistic individuals forming a brigade, with the motto: we-will-thrash-you-till-you're-sober. Of course there is no dearth of individuals who will enjoy beating others, especially when the law allows them to do so.

I suppose one should also be alerted to the fact that the Sarpanch was a woman. I wonder how disinterested she was while giving the go ahead.

Does anyone find this entire incident disturbing at all?
